Department Overview

Commerce Platforms is a strategic product suite that provides the core digital commerce capabilities McDonald’s needs to deliver consistent menu, ordering, and nutrition experiences across channels and markets. Within the suite, the Ordering Platform provides the transactional foundation for order creation and lifecycle management, improving consistency, reliability, and scalability across commerce channels. It provides the backbone during order conversion and fulfillment experiences.

Duties

  • Strategic Prioritization: Drive prioritization by aligning sprint and quarterly planning decisions with organizational objectives, product strategy, and leadership-defined priorities ensuring effort is directed toward the highest-impact work across the Ordering backend platform.

  • Backlog & Execution Ownership: Own the sprint backlog, write detailed epics and user stories, and actively participate in all Agile/sprint ceremonies alongside the engineering squads.

  • Technical Translation: Translate domain-level platform strategies into detailed technical requirements, including data mappings, API behaviors, system workflows, and edge-case logic.

  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Act as the interface for downstream digital channels (Mobile, Web, others), negotiating sprint priorities, aligning on delivery timelines, and ensuring they understand how to consume platform's capabilities.

  • System Deep-Dives: Roll up your sleeves to understand the underlying architecture. Troubleshoot data flow issues, analyze API payloads, and define technical acceptance criteria.

  • Dependency Coordination: Collaborate with PMs of consuming digital channels (Mobile, Web, Kiosk) to identify, sequence, and align on sprint-level backend dependencies, ensuring front-end and backend work progresses in sync.

  • Tactical Roadmap: Maintain a rolling, tactical roadmap (1-3 quarters out) for your domain, ensuring engineering execution aligns with the strategic vision set by Product Leadership.

Outcomes

  • Predictable, high-quality engineering execution with clear, well-defined user stories and technical acceptance criteria.

  • Strong alignment and trust with digital channel PMs (Mobile, Web, etc), ensuring they have the backend capabilities they need, exactly when they need them.

  • Reduced cycle time for engineering teams by providing clear abstractions, resolving dependency conflicts early, and keeping the backlog groomed and actionable.

  • A well-maintained and clearly documented suite of capabilities for Ordering platforms.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Technical Product Manager, Product Owner, or Technical Analyst working closely with backend engineering teams.

  • Strong technical aptitude: ability to independently analyze API contracts, understand data models, and map system-to-system workflows.

  • Experience writing highly detailed user stories, technical acceptance criteria, and managing a backlog in an Agile/Scrum environment.

  • Ability to communicate complex technical constraints to non-technical stakeholders, and conversely, translate business requirements into technical reality.

  • Comfortable managing competing priorities from multiple consuming channels (balancing a Mobile app request against a Web capability).
