Department Overview

This position provides opportunities to form relationships with a variety of McDonald’s stakeholders including US and Global technology product owners, suppliers, franchisees, and restaurant technology staff. The technology provided by this team must be highly available and scalable to be used across all 13,500 restaurants. The position must take a blended view of both the present state and of emerging technology trends to help build a technology roadmap that enables innovation in our restaurants while at the same time is practical to implement.

Duties

  • Building a globally-aligned hardware roadmap.
  • Managing the hardware and OS lifecycle for all restaurant devices.
  • Lab and field evaluation for all new hardware devices.
  • Soliciting feedback from customers in order to generate requirements for product improvements
  • Researching and prototyping with emerging technologies such as edge computing, self-order kiosks, integrated POS terminals, digital menu boards and more.
  • Strategic planning and execution related to hardware installation and maintenance, ensuring alignment with global standards and market-specific requirements.
  • Assessing the impact of hardware decisions on restaurant operations and developing innovative solutions to meet evolving business needs.
  • Collaborating closely with various stakeholders, including technology product owners, suppliers, franchisees, and restaurant staff, to ensure the successful implementation and scalability of technology across all restaurants.
  • Evaluating new technologies and prototyping solutions to build comprehensive product roadmaps.
  • Staying abreast of emerging trends in technology, such as edge computing, self-order kiosks, integrated POS terminals, and digital menu boards.
  • Balancing immediate operational requirements with long-term strategic objectives.
  • Forming strong relationships with key customers and contributing to ongoing technology transformation efforts within McDonald’s.
  • Driving innovation while maintaining the practicality and feasibility of technology implementation in restaurant environments.
  • Plan, schedule, coordinate, and manage all aspects of the Hardware Certification process.
  • Have a leadership attitude and highest level of commitment to ensure projects are managed effectively, on schedule, and on target.
  • Work with Product Owners, other MHQ Departments (e.g. Global & Segment Teams), Field stakeholders, Suppliers/Vendors, the OTP Program and O/O’s to understand business needs and their standard methodologies.
  • Create, monitor, and maintain critical metrics.
  • Be responsible for the services provided by a group of consultants to ensure all result are of high quality and within the timeframe agreed upon.
  • Ensure documentation remains current (e.g. Installation, Cabling, Topology, Electrical Standards, etc.).
  • Visit McDonald’s restaurants to gather feedback from crew and rethink approaches to technology to improve both the crew and guest experience.
  • Support and assist in daily meetings and ongoing technology transformation efforts
  • Understand McDonald’s business requirements to help produce quality outcomes and adapt to new challenges as they arise.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science/engineering, information technology, or a related field
  • Basic understanding of computer hardware, including but not limited to electrical circuits and power consumption, working with technology racks, cabling types and interfaces, and internal components such as CPU, Memory, RAID, NICs, etc.
  • Deep technical foundation, including but not limited to understanding of Microsoft Windows Server & Desktop OS, PowerShell, Hyper-V or other virtualization technologies, containers, cloud platforms, and system architecture.
  • Basic understanding of modern DevOps practices including Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD for infrastructure systems, Desired State Configuration, and automated testing practices.
  • Ability to understand complex integration needs, identify inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement, and recommend solutions and business process changes.
  • Ability to take an analytical approach to analyzing different solution options and work with multiple teams to drive alignment for a chosen approach.
  • Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to understand business requirements and translate them into technical roadmaps.
  • Solid grasp of the software, hardware, and Operating System development lifecycle and Agile development practices.
  • Document business requirements, processes, and technical specifications for reference and future use.
  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and implementation of projects related to business systems or processes.
  • Curious, task-orientated, and a self-starter with a shown tracker record of “getting things done”.
  • Experience in a retail or point of sale environment.
  • Experience overseeing or conducting firsthand installation of hardware into production environments.
  • Experience working with technology suppliers.
