Department Overview

This opportunity is part of the Global Technology Enterprise Products & Platforms (EPP) team, focused on Enterprise Service Management (ESM) and the engineering of scalable platforms that support software applications and services across McDonald’s global enterprise.

The Platform Engineer III is an experienced individual contributor responsible for designing, building, automating, and maintaining secure, reliable, and high-performing platform capabilities. The engineer collaborates with product teams, software engineers, architects, cybersecurity partners, and operations teams to establish reusable platform patterns, improve developer experience, and advance platform reliability and operational excellence.

Duties

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable platform capabilities that support enterprise applications, integrations, and services.
  • Translate architectural standards and product requirements into reusable platform components, services, and engineering patterns.
  • Evaluate technical options and contribute to platform roadmaps, lifecycle planning, and modernization decisions.
  • Develop Infrastructure as Code, configuration automation, self-service capabilities, and standardized deployment patterns.
  • Build and improve CI/CD pipelines, automated controls, and reusable templates that enable consistent software delivery.
  • Create technical documentation, runbooks, and onboarding guidance that help engineering teams adopt platform services effectively.
  • Implement monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability capabilities to improve platform health and service visibility.
  • Analyze complex performance and reliability issues, lead root-cause analysis, and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Embed security, resilience, compliance, and least-privilege principles into platform designs and engineering practices.
  • Provide tier-3 technical support, incident response, problem management, and defect resolution for platform services.
  • Support platform upgrades, release activities, capacity planning, disaster recovery testing, and operational readiness.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual work, technical debt, recurring incidents, and platform operating costs.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, technical design reviews, backlog refinement, estimation, and release planning.
  • Partner across global and cross-functional teams to resolve dependencies and deliver platform outcomes.
  • Mentor other engineers, share technical knowledge, and contribute to engineering standards and communities of practice.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 7+ years of hands-on platform, infrastructure, cloud, DevOps, or software engineering experience in enterprise environments.
  • Strong experience with cloud platforms, containerization, orchestration, and enterprise platform services.
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code and automation technologies such as Terraform, Ansible, or comparable tools.
  • Experience building and supporting CI/CD pipelines, source control, artifact management, and automated release processes.
  • Strong knowledge of observability, monitoring, logging, performance engineering, and incident troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of security controls, identity and access management, resilience, disaster recovery, and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in at least one scripting or programming language used for platform automation.
  • Strong understanding of Agile/Scrum delivery, DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, IT service management, secure engineering, and product-oriented platform practices.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Relevant cloud platform certification
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator or comparable container-platform certification
  • HashiCorp Terraform Associate or comparable Infrastructure as Code certification
  • ITIL v3 / v4 Foundation Certification
