Department Overview
The Senior Software Engineer role represents the senior technical individual contributor path within the engineering organization. Senior Software Engineers are McDonald’s subject matter experts (SMEs) in various technical domains, responsible for driving technical excellence across multiple squads while remaining hands-on practitioners.
Duties
Architecture and Design: Own technical direction and architectural decisions across assigned squads
Code Quality: Conduct PR reviews for complex changes, especially cross-squad initiatives
Engineering Standards: Define and enforce coding, testing, and review standards through the PEX program
Technical Documentation: Review and author engineering design documents, particularly for cross-squad initiatives
Technical Debt: Identify systemic technical debt and advocate for remediation priorities
Technical Consistency: Ensure consistency in technical approaches across multiple squads
Cross-Squad Initiatives: Lead technical initiatives that span multiple teams
JIRA Epic Refinement: Support complex epic breakdown and technical scoping
Architectural Reviews: Participate in and lead architecture review sessions
Standards Adoption: Drive adoption of engineering standards defined through PEX program
SDE3 Mentorship: Provide direct mentorship to SDE3s progressing toward Lead Engineer roles
Technical Guidance: Support Engineering Managers with technical decisions
Career Development: Help identify and develop future technical leaders
Code Reviews: Conduct educational code reviews that build team capability
Qualifications
- Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as McDonald’s SME in specific technical domains
- Knowledge Capture: Extract and document knowledge from contractor teams
- Technical Liaison: Bridge product intent with detailed execution between directors and product management
- Documentation: Create and maintain technical guides and domain-specific knowledge resources
