The Opportunity

The Manager, External Communications is a high-impact, strategic role responsible for shaping how Ronald McDonald House shows up in the world. Reporting to the Senior Manager, System Engagement & Alignment, this individual leads the planning, development, and execution of external communications strategies that drive brand awareness, trust, relevance, and revenue.

 

This role is ideal for a proactive communicator who thrives on identifying opportunities, building relationships, and crafting compelling narratives. With an ability to help shape the direction of Ronald McDonald House’s external voice, this person will lead storytelling across earned, paid, and owned channels – ensuring the Ronald McDonald House mission resonates with Canadians, key partners, and media.

Duties

External Communications Strategy & Execution

  • Lead the development and execution of Ronald McDonald House’s external communications strategy, ensuring alignment with brand priorities and mission impact.
  • Proactively identify and pursue earned media opportunities, including pitch development, outreach, and interview/spokesperson coordination.
  • Lead the development of spokesperson opportunities and voices across the organization, finding meaningful opportunities to amplify the Ronald McDonald House mission externally.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for media inquiries, managing triage and strategic response.
  • Oversee media monitoring and reporting, providing quarterly updates to leadership, and key partners as needed.
  • Collaborate with Regional Chapters to enhance local storytelling and provide strategic communications support.
  • Subject matter expert in the external communications space ensuring the leadership team is aware of external trends, threats and opportunities in alignment with the organizations business plan.
  • Lead the development of key external communications materials – including but not limited to: key messages, media pitches, backgrounders, external briefing documents, etc.
  • Partner with the Director of Integrated Brand and lead media and crisis response, as needed.


Campaigns & Partnerships

  • Lead the execution of strategic communications campaigns, managing agency partners and aligning messaging across stakeholder groups (e.g., donors, healthcare partners, McDonald’s, internal teams).
  • Partner with the Ronald McDonald House Canada Marketing team to provide PR amplification and execution recommendations to amplify mission storytelling.
  • With direction from the Senior Manager, System Engagement & Alignment, partner with McDonald’s Canada across departments to activate communications and influencer programs tied to key initiatives (e.g., McHappy Day).
  • Collaborate with McDonald’s Impact team to identify opportunities that support both Ronald McDonald House’s mission and McDonald’s brand trust platform.
  • Help shape messaging to integrate across Canada’s pediatric healthcare landscape, identifying opportunities to amplify Ronald McDonald House’s role and impact.
  • Support public affairs efforts by developing and executing PR strategies to reach government stakeholders in collaboration with the Director, Brand Engagement and Manager, Government Relations.
  • Align with Global Ronald McDonald House Communications Team on external messaging, guidance and opportunities, as needed.

Influencer Relations

  • Develop and lead Ronald McDonald House’s influencer strategy, identifying and cultivating relationships with social media influencers to amplify brand initiatives.
  • Partner with Marketing Specialist to optimize editorial calendar based on industry and social media trends, including the integration of influencer content into the editorial calendar and amplify key themes throughout the year.
  • Partner with communications agencies to manage influencer engagement and content planning.

Qualifications

  • Bilingual (proficient in English & French) is preferred
  • 6-8 years of experience in communications; agency, corporate, or non-profit experience is an asset.
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messaging to diverse external audiences.
  • Familiarity with Canada’s evolving media landscape and ability to craft compelling, timely messaging.
  • Proven ability to lead high-priority projects in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Deep understanding of earned, owned, and social media channels, with experience leveraging analytics to inform strategy and measure impact.
  • Highly organized, resourceful, and detail-oriented, with excellent time management and prioritization skills.
  • Strong relationship-building skills and ability to collaborate across teams and with external partners.
  • Strategic thinker with a bias toward action and the ability to navigate complex stakeholder environments.

Salary Range

The expected salary range for this role is $89,599 - $127,998 per year
